    Following the original purchasers of Taunton, thirty five additional men were allowed to buy in. They were not given all of the rights of the original holders, but they were considered owners of the town.

    The land on which Taunton was built was originally purchased from the natives by a group of forty-six investors. These men are known as the First Purchasers.
